Recently held IGI Salon: Gestalt is Green!

Gestalt is inherently ecological. Our premise that we are of the field simply means, we are not separate from other living beings and our planet - we are interdependent with our environment, always. With that spirit in mind, the salon was held at the Casa Verde home on Park Avenue in Indianapolis. Participants shared their desires and challenges for living in a way that helps sustain the planet. David Kadlec, from Casa Verde, gave a tour of this unique "green" home. the tour and David's passion for being a steward of our planet stimulated those who attended with lots of ideas of living in an eco-friendly manner. At the end of the meeting, many expressed a commitment for what they could each do to take the "next step" in whatever way they could. The energy of the group was very enjoyable and we here at IGI hope to have more available on our Web site for how to foster awareness of green living and how to support "what's next" for each of us.

Charlie Bowman attended the New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy February meeting

Charlie writes:  I admit I have found my "home away from home" at the New York Institute. I travel frequently to the Big Apple and love it when my schedule allows me to attend their monthly meetings in Lower Manhattan. I have made many good friends there who are like minded about Gestalt therapy theory, and what I have found is many similarities between my background and theoretical preferences and many members at the meetings.

First is the ongoing movement towards dialogue and field theory. I am in agreement with many there who believe there is no need to use the qualifier "relational" in front of "Gestalt therapy." Gestalt therapy, in its original form, is inherently relational. Of course, Fritz's antics notwithstanding, we have grown just as psychoanalysis and other branches of psychotherapy have grown.

What I like most at NYIGT is the atmosphere of camaraderie that develops as members take turns presenting to the membership each month on topics of interest to them. It is my hope that we can create something similar here at IGI with the Saturday Salons that premiere next month. It is great to hear and see and taste how friends, students ... our IGI Family ... assimilate Gestalt therapy into their own creations. I am looking forward to our first Salon with Karen.

The NYIGT meeting this month focused on transformation and the process of focusing less on what makes each one of us different and more on accepting our common humanness. The dialogue was lively and interesting. As luck would have it, I am headed back to Gotham next month, coinciding with Sylvia Crocker's presentation to the community on phenomenology. If you know me, you know the academic flavor of the presentations at NYIGT fits me well. But I will be right at home with our own Salons, and their focus on being, doing, joining OR thinking!

See you soon (or should I say fugedaboutit!),
